In Part 4 of this series by CIA Insurers, CIA looks at the distribution and siting of portable fire extinguishers. The distribution of extinguishers is dependent on several factors including the risk to be protected, floor area and individual practical considerations. There are rarely a one size fits all solution.
Having selected and purchased the correct extinguisher for the risk to be protected, it should be correctly sited to expedite its use during an emergency.
Extinguishers must be easily accessible and very clearly marked.
Extinguishers should be mounted on brackets fitted to walls or columns with their carrying handles not more than 1.5m above floor level and not left standing on the floor where they may be obstructed or knocked over.
Extinguishers should normally not be more than 46m apart.
Extinguishers located outdoors should be in cabinets with their operating instructions facing outwards and positioned for easy removal.
Symbolic signage must be put up to clearly indicate the location and type of firefighting equipment.
In Part 5 of the CIA newsletter, we will look at the training and use of extinguishers.
