There are news articles that are shared amongst our team members and are often sent by our clients that may be considered to be “sensational” whilst others are informative, enlightening and useful.
A particular article on the My Broadband website :” South Africa’s biggest and best IT news website, covering the latest international and local IT and tech news” to possible issues that owners may face
pertaining to their pre-paid meters: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/energy/563194-prepaid-electricity-meter-disaster-looms.html has caused quite a stir, internally within WPM and externally amongst our clients.
We reached out to several Prepaid Metering companies and the feedback received was that the issue has been blown out of proportion as most meters have already been upgraded by following a few simple steps.
There are few acronyms that first need to be clarified:
• TOKEN IDENTIFIER (TID) ROLLOVER (click to view site)
It is used to determine if a token has already been used in a payment meter.
The TID represents the minutes elapsed since the 1st January 1993.
The incrementing of the 24-bit field means that at some point in time, the TID value will roll over to a zero value.
• KEY REVISION NUMBER (KRN) ROLLOVER (click to view site)
The Key Revision Number (KRN) or the Token Identifier (TID) Rollover Programme is a prepaid electricity metering industry undertaking to
ensure that all prepaid meters that will roll over to a new TID code on 24 November 2024 are correctly coded.
Mr Kulani Mantsena from Logitech Prepaid (click to view site) stated the following:
“The TID rollover is essentially an update to all prepaid meters to what is known as the KRN (Key Revision Number).
The update is from KRN 1 to KRN 2 . All prepaid meters that are still under KRN1 will not be able to vend or buy electricity.
Most Utility Management companies such as ourselves have already migrated our meters from KRN 1 to KRN 2 and it is working perfectly so far.
In addition. All our Meters are programmed on KRN 2 upon being dispatched to our clients.”
We urge all residents to contact your scheme’s electricity Prepaid Vendor should you need any guidance or clarity on how to ensure that your meter is compliant and that you will not have any issues post 24 November 2024.
• The link attached above (I include it again for ease) (click to view site) is extremely helpful and informative and takes all Eskom pre-paid users through the process,
on a step-by-step basis :
key in the first 20 digits of your recode token and wait for it to be accepted
key in the second 20 digits of your recode token and wait for it to be accepted
very important last step: Key in the 20 digits of your purchased token to recharge your meter
