• Stick to well-lit areas, especially at night. 

When Using ATMs 

• Avoid isolated ATMs—use those inside banks or shopping centres.
• Shield your PIN and beware of people trying to “assist.” 
• If the machine looks tampered with, walk away. 

Public Transport & Ride-Hailing 

• When using Bolt/Uber, double-check the car registration and driver photo before  getting in.
• Avoid standing alone at bus or taxi stops after dark. 

2. Home & Property Safety 

If You’re Staying Home: 

• Test alarms, beams and electric fencing. 
• Keep driveways and gates well lit. 
• Avoid posting your location or expensive property on social media.

If You’re Travelling: 

• Tell a trusted neighbour or security company. 
• Use timers for lights or leave one interior light on. 
• Ensure all doors/windows are locked and valuables are out of sight.

Load Shedding Awareness 

• Power outages can increase the risk of break-ins. 
• Make sure backup batteries for alarms and gates are functional.
• Keep candles away from curtains and flammable items. 

3. Vehicle & Belongings Safety 

Guard Against Smash-and-Grabs 

• Keep valuables out of sight — even sunglasses or charger cables can attract  criminals. 
• Leave a car length of space at intersections to allow escape if necessary.
• Be cautious when stopped at robots at night.

• Park in well-lit areas with security guards present. 
• Double-check that your vehicle is locked—criminals often use signal jammers.
• Don’t leave bags, laptops, gifts or shopping visible in the car.

• Never leave drinks unattended—spiking cases rise around the holidays.
• Plan transport beforehand; avoid walking long distances at night.
• Stick with people you know and trust.

• Keep sunscreen, water and a hat on hot days. 
• Lock your car—even during quick picnic stops. 

5. Shopping Safely 

• Don’t overload yourself with shopping bags—this makes you a target.
• Be discreet when carrying large amounts of cash or purchasing high-value items.
• When loading your car, always lock the doors immediately.

• Avoid drinking and driving—roadblocks increase over Christmas and New Year. Use ride-hailing, taxis or a designated driver. 
• Fireworks can be dangerous—follow city regulations, keep water nearby and ensure children are supervised. 
• Watch your children closely in crowded areas such as events, malls and amusement parks.

• Report suspicious behaviour to your nearest CPF (Community Policing  Forum) or local security group. 
• Join neighbourhood WhatsApp or Telegram groups for real-time alerts.
