August and September is a busy period in the garden. Key tasks include pruning winter growth, planting early spring crops and dividing overcrowded perennials.
Pruning and Tidying
· Cut back ornamental grasses to ground level as new shoots appear.
· Prune late winter flowering shrubs and woody plants by about two-thirds.
· Clear out old winter debris and weeds before new growth starts.
Feeding and Soil Care
· Add a thick layer of compost around the base of the trees, shrubs and in flower beds.
· Feed spring-flowering bulbs with a balanced fertilizer while they finish blooming.
· Tidy up the lawn by removing debris and getting ready for early spring feeding.
